T his is a common issue. A gently sloping garden creates planting opportunities, but a steep one can pose problems. The first thing to do is get an idea of what you’re dealing with.

Measure the slope You will need a long stick, a spirit level, string and a tape measure. Ask someone to stand with the stick at the lowest point. Tie the string around the stick (so it can be moved up and down) and go to the highest point with the other end of the string.
